Academic Visa F1

Applicants who want to attend a university or other type of academic institution in America will need to obtain a student F1 visa for USA. This visa covers a wide age range, from primary school up to university. It also covers those taking language training courses in the USA. Visa F1 holders are allowed to enter the USA up to 30 days before their registration date and to remain in the country up to 60 days after completion of their course. There are restrictions for those attending public schools:
  • Students who are travelling to the USA to attend public elementary schools or publicly funded adult education courses are prohibited from obtaining this visa
  • Students applying for F1 visas to attend public secondary schools are limited to a stay of 12 months and must show proof that payment has been made for the full cost of the education

Non-academic visa M1

This USA student visa is for applicants who want to take a course that is non-academic in nature at an established vocational institution or business school. Holders of the visa M1 for study in the USA can remain in the country for the period required to complete the course plus 30 days, or for one year – whichever period is shorter.

Exchange students

Students pursuing a course outside the USA who are required to study at a US institution as part of their curriculum may require an exchange visitor J1 visa. School children taking part in an exchange, who plan to remain for a term/semester, will also require a J1 or F1 visa. See the J1 Visa page for more information.

Medical students

A medical student enrolled in a foreign medical school may be allowed to undertake an elective clerkship in a US medical school under a B1 visa.
